A hobo walking along the tracks came upon a home with chickens and a garden in the backyard. He walked up and knocked on the back door. A blond lady answered: "What can I do for you"? "Sorry to bother mam, I wonder if I could have a pot of water to make nail soup", he said pulling a nail tied to a string.
Bewildered she fulfilled his request. He thanked her and walked back towards the tracks, started a small fire, sat on a log and waited for the water to boil. She curiously approached and offered a ladle. He thanked her, took the ladle, stirred and sampled a taste. "Mmmm", he said. "How is it?", she asked. "Needs a little salt", he replied. She left and returned with salt and pepper.
He stirred, sampling a taste. "Mmmm, would you care to try?", he asked. She accepted and replied: "Interesting, but it's missing something". "A vegetable maybe?", he said. "Yes!" She bellowed as she ran to her garden and returned with veggies. He pulled out a rusty ol' knife to cut them up.
"Now that's coming around real well, would you like another taste?", he offered. "Why yes, yes I would", said the blond. She had a taste and said: "You know as good as it is, something still seems to be missing". She gave it a thought and exclaimed: "Chicken, how about some chicken"? She ran off, a few minutes later threw in some chicken. She proudly took a seat on the log and watched as the soup boiled.
"That smells delicious", said the blond. The hobo added a bit more salt and pepper saying: "It's ready, all we need is a couple of bowls and spoons". She ran in and back out before the door could close. They both sat on the log and ate by the fire. When done, he thanked her, pulled his nail out of the soup and shoved it back into his pocket. She thanked him and said: "That was the best nail soup I have ever had!"
